A detox seems like a great idea, but they’re really nothing more than a waste of your hard-earned cashola.

They’re sold as a quick way to cleanse your system and kick-start a weight loss program, but you won’t find any evidence that following a detox program will eliminate more toxins than your body would naturally process.

DIY Detox

Your body is actually really good at detoxing all on its own. Our kidneys, liver and gut effectively neutralise toxins within hours of us eating them, converting them into products that can be passed out of our bodies (like wee and poo).

Our lungs, skin and immune system are also primed to remove or neutralise toxic substances.

Your body on a detox

Most people get an ‘upset stomach’ (this is code for diarrhea), exhaustion, headaches, bad breath and aches and pain. This is not your body detoxing; it’s actually you going into starvation mode because you haven’t eaten enough carbs.

Starvation mode

This means your system is being flooded with fat storage hormones and enzymes, while your fat burning hormones and enzymes have taken a dive along with your metabolism. Your metabolism slows down as your body literally eats itself, breaking down your lean muscle tissue to fuel your brain function. Not too great, huh?

Losing weight

Sure, you’ll most likely lose a lot of weight quickly, but you’re actually just losing fluid, your carbohydrate stores and lean muscle – not fat. You will regain all of this weight as soon as you start eating normally again and you’ll probably put on even more weight as most people binge eat after periods of starvation.

The bottom line

Detox diets can be expensive and are unnecessary and possibly damaging. You’d do better to simply eat more fruit and veggies and less processed foods, and do more exercise (call me!).

My goal is to access your untapped potential and to show you what amazing physical feats you can achieve.

My workouts are tough because I know you’re strong enough to do them! (And of course, because they have to be to work!) I set out to kick your butt, knowing that you’ll only get stronger — and the stronger you get physically, the stronger you will become in every other way.

Cupcakes contain roughly 150 calories each (90 if you’re having a mini). To burn this off, you’re looking at a solid (no slacking!) 17 minutes of circuit training with plenty of push-ups, squats and other strenuous exercises.

Enjoy your cupcake, but realise that you’re going to have to slog it out later to burn it off. Is eating that cupcake really worth the workout, especially with the knowledge that you’re not burning fat, you’re just paying for a treat?

BUT… don’t think this means you should be filling your daily calorie quota with those oh-so-tasty baked and fried foods. Not only are they jam packed full of unnecessary calories; both of these foods contain trans fat.

Trans fat acts like saturated fat in the body and too much can increase your cholesterol levels, as well as your triglycerides (a type of fat found in your blood), both of which increase your risk of heart disease, but also stroke and diabetes.

Trans fat has also been shown to increase inflammation within your body by damaging the cells lining your blood vessels, so definitely steer clear if you’re recovering from any sort of injury.

Obviously we want to avoid hot chips and anything battered, but with baked goods the best solution is to make your own and use vegetable oil or fruit purée (apple is a great substitute) so you can control what you’re eating and skip the trans fats.
